UkraineRussiaCrisis : India has abstained from the UNSC resolution that condemned Russia’s ‘aggression’ against Ukraine
3 countries, including India, China, UAE abstained. 11 countries voted in favour of the resolution while Russia used its veto power (to block the resolution).
By abstaining, India retained the option of reaching out to relevant sides in an effort to cover the gap and find the middle ground with an aim to foster dialogue and diplomacy between the countries. Sources also said that India has been in touch with all sides urging the parties concerned to return to the negotiations. An earlier draft of the resolution had proposed moving. India maintained its consistent, steadfast, and balanced position on this issue.
India called for all member states to acknowledge and honour the principles of international law & UN Charter, as these provide a constructive way forward. ‘Security of Indian community, particularly stranded students, their evacuation from Ukraine is immediate priority for India” said the officials.
An earlier draft of the resolution had proposed moving the resolution under Chapter VII of the UN Charter, which provides the framework within which the UNSC may take enforcement action. However, this was dumped in the final version while put to vote in UNSC.
