There is a total umber of 11 settlements, where members resort mainly to cultivation for a livelihood.
BANGALORE: Uthishta, a Bangalore based autonomous service group is organising Kathakali Sandhya on 26 February, 2012 at Indra Nagar Sangeeth Sabha. The programme, which begins at 5.00 pm, will also bestow Uthishta Seva Puraskarato theAgasthyar Bala Samskara Kendra fraternity. The award is being conferred in lieu of the selfless services done by team members towards the development of Kani tribals, especially in the field of education.

Agasthyar Bala Samskara Kendra, Poothode is one of the initial ventures for these folks. Begun in 1984, the pillar and driving force behind the school were Rajamma, Shoba and Ramalakshmi. The school is being run in cozy and compact cabin like segments made out of bamboo. Education is imparted to over a 100 children, who have been gauged as quick learners.
4 teachers, who render pure voluntary service, stay there and take care of these children as their own family. Children are groomed well here till Standard 4. They are given uniforms, books and other study materials free of cost. They are also provided free lunch in the afternoon. Students are imparted knowledge on India’s cultural milieu as well. Indian festivals like Onam, Shiva Ratri, Sree Krishna Jayanthi etc and days of national significance like Independance Day, republic Day are celebrated and observed with apt explanations provided, about their significance.
As they pass Standard 4, Sewa Bharati has made provisions for children to continue their studies at Vellanadu Mitra Niketan. Girls who wish to further their studies are housed at Agasthiya Kuteeram Balika Sadanam. A new schoolSreekrishna Balasamskara Kendram has also become functional from 1998.
