1. Gujarat police & IB killed Ishrat, 3 others in ‘cold blood’, says CBI, Heat On Modi But CM & Close Aide Not Named: Ahmedabad: The CBI has charged the Narendra Modi government and the Intelligence Bureau with the fake encounter of 19-year-old Mumbra college student Ishrat Jahan and three others in June 2004. In its chargesheet filed on Wednesday, the CBI said Ishrat Jahan was falsely branded a terrorist out
to kill Modi and she and the other three were killed in “cold blood”. [TOI p1]
2. CBI faced higher-ups’ pressure? : Ahmedabad: The CBI has bought time before nailing Rajinder Kumar, the IB chief in Gujarat at the time of
the fake encounter of Ishrat Jahan in June 2004. Kumar, allegedly the main conspirator in the case, is retiring this monthend as the CBI’s special
director and his name is likely to figure as an accused in a second chargesheet expected to be filed soon after that. [TOI p10]

LeT ignored, our rising leaders made targets: BJP : New Delhi: The BJP on Wednesday attacked the Congress and the CBI, saying that the chargesheet in the Ishrat Jahan case downgraded the role of the Pakistan-based terror outfit Lashkar-e-Taiba and was intended to target saffron leaders. 5. Vanzara, Pande among three top cops accused : Ahmedabad :The
first charge sheet filed by the Central Bureau of Investigation (CBI) in the
Ishrat Jahan fake encounter case has several senior officers of the
Gujarat police in the dock yet again. Altogether, eight senior officers are
among the accused in the four encounter cases declared as fake by the
agency. The common name is “encounter specialist” DG Vanzara.[HT
6. Cabinet clears food security via ordinance, Cong Set To Woo Aam
Admi With 5kg Foodgrain A Month : New Delhi: The Union Cabinet on
Wednesday cleared an ordinance to implement the politically significant
national food security bill without waiting for Parliament’s monsoon
session that is about a month away. The decision to press ahead with the
ordinance — delayed after the government sought to enlarge political
support for the bill — is rooted in the Congress’s determination to project
its commitment to food security as a key aspect of its 2014 campaign.

10. CBI Moves SC for Cancelling Unitech MD Chandra’s Bail in 2G Case :
NEW DELHI : The CBI has moved the Supreme Court seeking
cancellation of bail of Sanjay Chandra, MD of Unitech Ltd, who is an
accused in the 2G spectrum allocation case, alleging that he tried to

11. PM, Oppn leader, CJI to pick CBI chief : Govt to SC : New Delhi :
Listing measures to insulate the CBI from “external influences and
intrusion”, the Centre told the Supreme Court Wednesday that the CBI
director would be appointed on the recommendation of a three-member
panel — headed by the Prime Minister and including the Leader of
Opposition in the Lok Sabha and the Chief Justice of India or a nominated
judge — for a period of “not less than two years”.[IE p1]
12. Godda MP had warned centre of attack : Ranchi : A BJP
parliamentarian from Jharkhand has accused the Centre of ignoring his
alerts for putting the highly Maoist-affected tag on the state’s Santhal
Pargana. Godda MP Nishikant Dubey said he had written reams to the
Centre — many of them to the PMO — four years ago to justify the
inclusion of the entire Santhal Pargana area in the high-risk category.[HT
13. Antony snubs Anand Sharma on FDI : New Delhi: Defence minister A
K Antony has firmly opposed the move by a section in the government to
hike FDI in defence sector, arguing that encouraging foreign companies to

Cabinet on Wednesday finally approved an ordinance to launch the ruling

Wednesday submitted to the Supreme Court its plan for granting
autonomy to the CBI, promising a fixed two-year tenure for the chief, who

16. ‘Clean chit to Bansal a bid to shield PM’ : New Delhi: The BJP on
Wednesday said the CBI’s “clean chit” to former railway minister Pawan
Kumar Bansal in the cash-for-jobs scam was an attempt to shield the
prime minister. BJP spokesperson Vijay Sonkar Shastri said this showed
that the CBI was “like a toy in the hands of the Congress party.” [TOI p15]
17. Govt favours death term for 3, Nirbhaya Effect: UPA Wants Prez To
Reject Mercy Pleas : New Delhi: It is the Nirbhaya effect on UPA-2. The
government has recommended death penalty for three convicts found
guilty of women-related crimes. While Madhya Pradesh resident Maganlal
was found guilty of murdering his five daughters, Karnataka’s Shivu and
Jadeswamy were convicted of rape and murder. Both cases have been
sent to the President for his assent by the home ministry.[TOI p14]
18. BJP critical of CBI clean chit to PK Bansal : New Delhi : The BJP
claimed on Wednesday that the CBI’s move to give a ‘clean chit” to former
railway minister PK Bansal in the cash-for transfer scam by not naming
him in the charge sheet was an attempt to protect the Prime Minister.[HT
19. Food ordinance passed, Pawar pitches for GM crop : New Delhi : A
strong pitch for genetically-modified (GM) crops revived again in the top
quarters of the UPA with agriculture minister Sharad Pawar batting for it
on Wednesday in the wake of the government’s decision to push the food

32. I-T dept sends Munde notice : Mumbai : The Income-Tax department
served a notice on Wednesday to deputy Leader of Opposition in Lok
Sabha Gopinath Munde, who recently admitted to spending Rs 8 crore
during the 2009 Parliament elections. The department wants to know the

33. NCP nominee is new Sikkim Governor : New Delhi : Conceding to
NCP’s demand that political posts should be shared with allies, Shriniwas

34. Heavy turnout in Punjab panchayat elections : Chandigarh :At least
80 per cent of the electorate in Punjab’s rural areas exercised their right to
vote in the elections to 13,080 village panchayats, where polling was
conducted on Wednesday amid tight security. Except for some skirmishes
at different places, polling remained peaceful till reports last came in.[The

36. Gram panchayat polls in Andhra from July 23 : Hyderabad : Elections

39. 1,227 children reported missing in Uttarakhand : Dehradun: As if
heart-wrenching images of children separated from their parents in the
Uttarakhand disaster were not enough, state chief secretary Subhash
Kumar is learned to have told a four-member team of the National
Commission for Child Protection Rights on Wednesday that 1,227 children

40. CJIs must have fixed tenure to bring in reforms: Sathasivam : New
Delhi: At a time when the judiciary faces its biggest challenge to deal with
a backlog of nearly three crore cases and requires out-of-thebox solutions,
