Swami Lakshmanananda Saraswati – The Martyr Saint Who Laid Down His Life for the Protection of Dharma
The sacred land of Odisha, blessed by the presence of Bhagwan Jagannath, has been enriched by the contributions of numerous eminent personalities who have guided society. Among them was the extraordinary saint Swami Lakshmanananda Saraswati Ji, born on 15 August 1926 in Gurujang village of Angul district, who attained martyrdom while courageously confronting forces hostile to Hindu society.
In his youth, Swamiji joined the Prajamandal and plunged into the freedom movement. After his marriage, he received initiation, embraced Sannyasa, and undertook an intensive study of Hindu Dharmik scriptures and the Sanskrit grammar.
To stand firmly against anti-national elements active in the local society of Kandhamal, Odisha, he established his centre at Chakapad in the same region and made it his abode. Swamiji undertook extensive efforts to promote the material advancement of tribal society on a spiritual foundation and to awaken in its people a sense of pride in their own culture. By encouraging Sanskrit education, women’s bhajan centres, agriculture, cow rearing, and water conservation, Swamiji showed the tribal communities the path of self-respect and self-reliance. Through the performance of Shuddhi Yajnas, he also inspired members of these communities to pledge themselves to righteous conduct.
By presenting the worship of “Dharani Penu,” a revered symbol of the community’s faith, in a contemporary context, Swamiji strengthened the roots of society.
Through the pilgrimages of Bhagwan Jagannath and the organisation of Yajnas and other ceremonies, he rekindled in the local society a firm adherence to its Dharmic faith and a sense of pride in its traditions. To this end, he made the process of returning to the Hindu fold simpler and more accessible by using the Nirmalya of Bhagwan Jagannath, the soil and leaves of the Tulsi plant, and Gangajal.
As a result of Swamiji’s efforts, anti-social and anti-national elements active in the region began to feel increasingly unsettled. They made several attempts to attack him directly. However, Swamiji continued his work with even greater determination, firmly establishing his presence and carrying forward his mission without interruption.
Ultimately, on the sacred occasion of Janmashtami, intolerant fanatical forces attacked the Jaleshpatta Ashram and brutally murdered Swamiji along with four of his disciples.
The life of the great martyr saint Swami Lakshmanananda Saraswati was wholly dedicated to the protection of the Motherland and Dharma. This sacred mission was the very purpose of his life. His personality and his deeds were inseparable, reflecting an unwavering unity of conviction and action.
Today, numerous workers, inspired by his supreme sacrifice and carrying its spirit in their hearts, remain steadfastly committed to strengthening Dharmic faith and preserving traditions.
On the occasion of the birth anniversary of the revered saint, Vedanta Kesari Swami Lakshmanananda Saraswati Ji, the Rashtriya Swayamsevak Sangh offers its humble tributes to this great saint and martyr.
